In Wayne Rooney’s farewell, England beats U.S.

Wayne Rooney’s record-breaking England soccer career ended with suspense, but without a goal Thursday night.
It was a memorable night anyway at Wembley Stadium in London, as England’s most capped non-goalkeeper, recalled after two years off the team, returned to have a ceremonial farewell, 15 years after his debut, in a 3-0 win over the United States before 68,155 fans.
Whenever the striker touched the ball after entering in the 58th minute, however far from goal in a 120th appearance, fans shouted, “Shoot!” The best chance came in the second minute of stoppage time. Primed in the penalty area, Rooney turned to shoot, only to be denied by U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan’s low save.
