Dana Nessel and Alanna Maguire

Dana Nessel had a very important message for homophobic people mad about her recent election win.

After a tight election race, Nessel became Michigan’s first openly gay attorney general on Wednesday (7 November) morning.

The Democrat and former prosecutor won with 48.5% of the vote, compared to 46.8% by her Republican opponent Tom Leonard.

Dana Nessel: ‘Thank you Alanna, I love you’

During her acceptance speech, she began thanking people who helped in her campaign.

She turned to her wife Alanna Maguire and said: ‘[I want to thank] my beautiful wife for sticking with me through all of this. Thank you Alanna, I love you.’

Nessel then addressed the audience: ‘And for all of you out there that can’t handle the fact that I am about to become the first openly gay person to hold state-wide office [in Michigan]…’

She then pulls her wife towards her and kisses her on the lips. The pair also move in for a sweet hug.

The crowd erupts into cheers of support.

Nessel then leans into the microphone and says: ‘That was so obnoxious – but I just had to do it.

During her speech, she also brings a lesbian couple on stage to talk about previous failed attempts at legislating marriage equality in Michigan.
