Former A’s reliever Brad Ziegler retires

Brad Ziegler, who broke into the majors with the 2008 A’s as a submarine-style relief pitcher, announced his retirement in a Twitter post Wednesday.
Ziegler, who pitched for four teams, recalled his early days in the A’s farm system, including when he was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of then-Giants prospect Fred Lewis.
“I was laying in an ICU room with a skull fracture from a line drive, wondering if I’d ever play again — and in reality, just praying I’d be able to live a normal life,” Ziegler wrote.
