First-ever battle of ‘openers’ between A’s and Rays set for Saturday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Saturday will be the first-ever installment of what might become the norm around baseball: Both the A’s and Rays will use “openers,” relievers who work just an inning before giving way to a more traditional starter.
Liam Hendriks is Oakland’s anticipated opener, as he has been four times this month, with either Frankie Montas or Chris Bassitt following him. Ryen Stanek is the likely Tampa Bay opener, with Yonny Chirinos to follow.
The Rays are 26-19 when using an opener, and their ERA since first using the approach is an American League-best 3.22, including an AL-best 3.48 ERA in the first inning.
