Stanford’s Isaiah Salinda falls in U.S. Amateur semifinals

PEBBLE BEACH — Isaiah Salinda of South San Francisco rallied from an early two-hole deficit against UCLA sophomore Devon Bling, but his dream of being the first Stanford golfer since Tiger Woods to win the U.S. Amateur was ended when Bling won their semifinal match 1 up.

In the other semifinal, Norway’s Viktor Hovland, a junior at Oklahoma State, birdied six of seven holes he played on the back nine to defeat Texas teen Cole Hammer 3 and 2 on a foggy morning at Pebble Beach that was conducive to low scores thanks to soft greens.

By advancing to the final, Hovland and Bling qualified for next year’s Masters and the U.S. Open, which also will be played at Pebble Beach. The U.S.
