A’s jump into first-place tie after downing Astros 7-1

Trevor Cahill had near no-hit stuff Saturday, a continuation of Oakland’s sensational starting pitching the past few weeks — and it’s those starters, against the odds, who have helped push the A’s into a first-place tie in the American League West.

Cahill, who signed his deal with the A’s in March, held the defending champion Astros to just an infield single in his seven innings, and Oakland’s doubles-happy offense did the rest in a 7-1 victory at the Coliseum. There were 32,204 on hand to see the A’s join Houston atop the division, the first time Oakland has been in first place outside of April since Aug. 25, 2014.

“There was some electricity out there,” catcher Josh Phegley said.
