Last year Davis Mills switched his number every week in practice. On the Stanford scout teams, he pretended to be Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Luke Falk, Jake Browning — whoever was the quarterback for that week’s opponent.
The background was a strange place to be for Mills, who the previous year had been rated the top prep quarterback in the country by recruiting services Scout and Rivals.
In football-crazy Georgia, he led Greater Atlanta Christian School to the state final as a sophomore and senior and the semifinals as a junior. It still irks him that the Spartans didn’t win a state title on his watch.
“My sophomore year, we had a great team,” he said. “We had 15 (FBS) signees.
