The day veteran linebacker NaVorro Bowman signed with the Raiders last season, Marquel Lee recalls, quarterback Derek Carr approached with some advice.
“DC told me, ‘Anything that Bo eats, you gotta eat,’” Lee said.
A fifth-round pick last year, Lee had plenty on his plate early in his rookie season. The Raiders, young and inexperienced at linebacker, made Lee their starter in the middle out of camp. Lee started the first five games before suffering an ankle injury that sidelined him the next three weeks.
When he returned, Lee had been supplanted by Bowman, who memorably played his first game three days after signing with Oakland and hardly missed a defensive snap the rest of the year.
