Lessons from the World Cup — and a countdown to the women’s 2019 tournament

The World Cup is over, but don’t be sad. Because there’s another one coming in just 11 months.

The 2019 Women’s World Cup will begin June 7 in France. The opening game will be in Paris, with the final one month later in Lyon. Twenty-four of the top teams in the world will compete.

And unlike the men’s World Cup that ended Sunday, the odds are very good that not only will the American women be playing, they’ll be considered a favorite. They are the defending world champions, the top-ranked team in the world, and despite stumbling in the Rio Olympics in 2016 (ousted before the medal round), they remain a world force.
