A deadly fire burning near the Oregon border more than doubled in size overnight and was threatening Saturday to overwhelm hundreds of homes, a railroad line and the Interstate 5 freeway, authorities said.
The Klamathon Fire, which broke out Thursday and claimed the life of an unidentified resident, grew to 21,803 acres and was only 5 percent contained, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.
Fifteen structures have been destroyed, several roads have been shut down and residents in several small communities have been ordered to pack up and move out. Emergency shelters were set up at schools in Yreka (Siskiyou County) and Ashland, Ore.
