Woman who died rescuing youth in Half Moon Bay identified

Authorities on Monday identified the 47-year-old Pleasanton woman who drowned Sunday after being knocked down and swept into the Pacific Ocean by a rogue wave while she was attempting to photograph family members and friends on a beach south of Half Moon Bay.

Aarti Senthilvel was standing at the water’s edge at Cowell Ranch State Beach around 6:30 p.m. to take a photograph of three youths, all teenagers or older, when the wave struck.

“The children’s backs were to the water,” San Mateo sheriff’s detective Rosemerry Blankswade said. “The wave knocked them over.
