Could Giants, other teams be cautious at trade deadline because of luxury tax?

Last winter’s free-agent signings were slowed in part by traditionally high-payroll teams’ unwillingness to surpass the luxury tax threshold.

We could see more of the same heading to the July 31 trade deadline, which dramatically could affect the race in the National League West.

The Giants signed reliever Tony Watson in February after creatively constructing a three-year contract with escalators that could pay the lefty a bunch in the future but kept his 2018 salary low enough to allow the team to stay under the competitive balance tax threshold.
